decisionLab celebrated its first birthday in style at practitioners’ day at OR54, in Edinburgh.
Dubbed ‘Making an Impact’ Wednesday, the day was designed by operational research practitioners with content perfectly tailored to their peers.
As well as hosting a stand at the exhibition, decisionLab Director Kate Swatridge organised a variety of ‘Technique Taster’ sessions on topics including career development on a shoestring, agent-based simulation, data visualisation and networking for introverts; all crafted to give insights into practical OR skills.
Meanwhile Liz Archbald, director and optimisation expert, delivered a very well-received paper on some challenges in modelling protection of assets.
Of course, no birthday celebration would be complete without cake and laughter, both of which were in plentiful supply at the decisionLab stand. As well as handing out yummy cupcakes to visitors, the team ran a joke competition for the best OR, maths and stats joke or pun, with the winner walking away with a bottle of champagne.
Finally, the team played matchmaker by creating a lonely-hearts-style board to match up academics looking for businesses to apply their research in the real world and vice versa.
“OR54 really was lots of fun and a fantastic opportunity to network with like-minded individuals and get an update on new industry developments. I can’t think of a better way to have celebrated decisionLab’s very successful first year,” says decisionLab’s David Buxton, who ran a pub simulation workshop at the conference.
decisionLab’s problem solvers are experts in their field and are available to deliver training courses and workshops at your event or for your organisation.
